Lucy was secretly engaged to Booth, and it is speculated that Booth was using her for her political connections. Lucy's father was Senator John Parker Hale, a Republican and an abolitionist, and friend of Abraham Lincoln. Through Lucy, Booth obtained a ticket to Lincoln's second inauguration and was certainly within shooting range, however he did not take action that day.
